Motivation – Definition, Meaning and Types
What is Motivation:
According to Kreitner, “Motivation is a psychological process that gives behavior, purpose and direction”. Similarly, Different people define Motivation in their different ways. According to me, Motivation is a powerful emotion that encourages us to achieve our desired goals.
Types of Motivation:
A human being can be motivated by extrinsic motivation or intrinsic motivation. The extrinsic motivation is basically an encouragement that is given by others. For example, at our workplace, salary increment or promotion provides extrinsic motivation to us. Besides, the admirations from our friends or relatives also motivated us extrinsically. In the corporate world, the business owners usually try to motivate their employees by giving job satisfaction to them. The job satisfaction can be provided through different ways like: by making the working environment favourable to the employees, by appreciating them verbally or giving rewards for their good performance and by accepting their admissible demands. The job satisfaction of the employees improves their performance and workability, that provides better outcomes for the business owners.
So far, we have discussed extrinsic motivation and its benefits. Now let’s talk about intrinsic motivation. The intrinsic motivation comes from inside the human being. In order to be motivated intrinsically, we do not need any other person. In fact, we can motivate us on our own. Therefore, it is also called self-motivation. When we do some work for our own pleasure, it gives us intrinsic motivation. Moreover, when we gain an achievement for some work, then, we get motivated from inside. In order to get self-motivated, it is essential to enjoy our work. For this, first we have to make a list of our desired activities, then we have to choose the most favourite work. Such work or activity can become our passion to uplift our career. For example, if a person likes writing (stories or poems), then it can become his/her passion. In this way, intrinsic motivation permanently stays inside a person because he/she enjoys his/her work consistently, but the extrinsic motivation stays temporarily until the person fails in his/her work.
Therefore, Motivation (extrinsic or intrinsic) encourages us to achieve our desired objectives but we should try to motivate us intrinsically rather have extrinsic motivation.
